Viola - pansies the plant of the month May

Violas are the true harbinger of spring
Both with big and small flowers.

The pansies with small flowers - Viola cornuta - have enjoyed great popularity for a number of years and today half of all the sold pansies are Viola cornuta.

But the varieties with big flowers still look ever so tempting with their big flowers, when ready for sale on the trolleys in super markets and garden centres.

The recent trend goes, however, towards increasing popularity for the varieties with medium-sized flowers (5-7 cm) as they are being planted more and more in the beds of parks and cemeteries.  
The flowers are slightly smaller than those with big flowers, but they compensate for the minor size with a free-flowering habit. So they give more colour and consequently render an intense colour impression to the beds.

Examples of series with big flowers (7-9 cm)
• 'Dynamite', good all-round series for autumn and spring production in both unheated and heated glass house, 24 colours
• 'Inspire', good compact series for production in unheated and heated glass house, 25 colours
• 'Frizzle Sizzle' – interesting trendy pansy with pleated petals. See the pictures of the new colours!

Examples of pansies with medium-sized flowers (5-7 cm)
• 'Supreme' – the standard series with all the right colours, for production in autumn and spring in unheated glass house.
• 'Ultima' – has a number of special colours that may add a unique touch to the 'Supreme' series.

Examples of pansies with small flowers (V. cornuta) (3-5 cm);
• The 'Sorbet' series has the widest possibilities, for trays, 9 cm pots or bigger pots with 3 plants. See the pictures of the new colours!
• 'Rebel' and 'Rebellina' are varieties with long trailing flowers, good for hanging baskets.
