MysteryLady
The new asters are called Ingrid, Jessica,
Debbie, Demi, Katharine and Celine. They are attractive, colourful and a homage to some of the world’s major female stars – who now have a beautiful flower named after them. But the road to the stars is long and tough…

“First the very best varieties on the market and the most beautiful ones growing wild are handpicked. They are crossed by skilled and experienced producers with the application of ultramodern technology, the most upto-date know-how...and a little luck!” explains Allan Bech Olesen from GASA
Young Plants.
The selected parent plants are crossed so that you can pass on the very best characteristics. Then begins the massive
hunt for budding talents, where only the very best progress... they are sorted, tested, ranked, re-bred... until only the finest remain: the winners!
A wealth of talent
The characteristics that are prioritised are appearance, e.g. larger and fuller flowers, exciting new colours, and denser and more compact plants. The focus is on short growth from cutting to mature plant and longevity. The plants must be both robust and resistant... these are just some of the many criteria assessed.
It can take several years, is expensive and requires a lot of resources to breed strong new products. But, on the other hand, there is a large market for sale of licences. A good new plant can stand out on the market with the right branding and story-telling. It’s an investment – but it can pay off when it’s done well!
The Mystery Lady plants have just been unveiled this autumn and, judging from how they have been received and the demand, they are well on the way to becoming new stars. But they also have many of the desired characteristics.
They are beautiful with full flowers and excellent shapes. They are more robust and resistant than many other asters on the market. They have both a short growing season and can last for a very long time.
